Michiel Elgersma created this print, Leerlooiende Khoikhoi, in the 18th century. The composition, primarily in monochrome, is structured by a foreground of human activity against a backdrop of expansive landscape. The artist uses line and form to create a tableau that seems both ethnographic and staged. Elgersma's work invites us to consider how images mediate cultural understanding. The arrangement of figures, engaged in the tanning of hides, is meticulously rendered, creating a sense of ordered observation. This structured portrayal, however, may also reflect a European desire to categorize and understand the unfamiliar, imposing a formal order onto the depiction of Khoikhoi life. Consider the interplay between depiction and interpretation, and how the formal structure of this print shapes our perception of its subjects. Art, here, becomes a site where observation and interpretation blur.
