Editor: This gelatin silver print from 1936, titled "Onbekende locatie in de Verenigde Staten: locomotief" -- that’s “Unknown location in the United States: locomotive" -- presents such a stark, almost imposing view of a steam engine. The high contrast and head-on perspective make it feel both monumental and slightly unsettling. What do you make of it? Curator: Well, isn’t it something? To me, it's less about unsettling and more about the sheer industrial might of the thing. The photographer has almost personified the engine, staring right at you like some metal-clad giant ready to rumble. There’s a whiff of smoke and sweat and coal about it, even in this still, silvered form. Don’t you feel that raw energy, that almost…audacious American confidence, particularly given its creation during the Depression era? Editor: I do see the confidence, now that you mention it. The way it dominates the frame. Is that kind of in-your-face composition typical for photography of the time? Curator: Not necessarily, but think about what trains symbolized back then—progress, expansion, the conquering of distances. Putting it front and centre like this isn’t just documenting; it’s celebrating. Plus, the almost brutal realism is a nice little slap in the face of more genteel, painterly photographic approaches that were also common. Editor: That's a good point. It's not trying to be pretty, it's just...there. The angle really forces you to confront it. Thanks, that gives me a lot to think about! Curator: My pleasure. It's a beast, isn't it? Makes you want to climb aboard and go…somewhere. Preferably somewhere loud and exciting.
