Jean Pelletier created this drawing of a candlestick with leaf motifs. The image is dominated by classical elements; the fluted form of the candlestick evokes ancient Greek columns, symbols of stability and order. Garlands of leaves, draped across the surface, signal themes of celebration and honor. The motif of the garland is particularly interesting, as it has a rich history. In ancient times, garlands were used in religious ceremonies to adorn statues and people, signifying purity and consecration. We find similar motifs in Renaissance paintings, where garlands frame sacred scenes, suggesting a connection between earthly beauty and divine presence. These symbols have evolved and been passed down through history, shifting in meaning as they are recontextualized. The candlestick as a source of light taps into our collective subconscious; light is truth, illumination, knowledge. The design of the candlestick, with its classical references and decorative garlands, transforms a simple object into a powerful emblem of cultural memory and emotional resonance.
