Stefano della Bella created this depiction of the Medici family coat of arms in the 17th century. At its heart lies the shield with six balls, or "palle," symbols of the Medici family's power in Florence. But consider the lion and other animals, these are symbols of strength and vigilance. Their presence is not merely decorative; they evoke a primal connection to power. These motifs appear again and again, for example in ancient heraldry. The “palle” themselves have uncertain origins. Some say they were medicinal pills, others claim they are dents from battle shields. Over time, these balls have become synonymous with the Medici name, emblems of their family's complex history, reflecting the ever-shifting narratives of power and identity. Each viewing is a re-experiencing, a resurgence of the past made present.
