Brian Froud created ‘Iris’ using paint to depict a surreal, mythological scene with a dominant blue hue that lends a cool, ethereal atmosphere. The figure of Iris, rendered in various shades of blue, immediately captures our attention as she is surrounded by a teeming world of fantastical creatures. Froud’s composition draws us into a realm that challenges fixed notions of reality. The arrangement of figures and creatures, along with the use of color and detail, evokes a sense of an alternative ecological structure. He uses visual elements of line, color and composition to play with ideas around perception and representation. Consider, for instance, the way Froud blurs the boundaries between the human and non-human, the natural and supernatural. By destabilizing these conventional categories, Froud creates a space for questioning our understanding of nature, and challenges us to re-evaluate our place within the cosmos.
