Johann Sadeler I created this print, "Heilige Hyacinthus van Polen ontmoet een liggende man", using engraving. It depicts a miracle attributed to Saint Hyacinth of Poland, as he resuscitates a drowned boy. Produced in the late 16th century, most likely in the Netherlands, the image reflects the period’s intense religious environment. The visual codes are clear: the halo identifies Hyacinth as a holy figure, and the distraught mother and lifeless child evoke pathos. The Dominican order, to which Hyacinth belonged, was a powerful institution, using images like this to promote its saints and their supposed miracles. This print functioned as a piece of religious propaganda, reinforcing the authority of the Church. Studying it requires understanding the social and institutional roles of religious imagery, and it also calls for a deeper understanding of the histories of particular religious orders in Europe.
