Henri Matisse made 'The Piano,' in oil paint, sometime in his life. The way Matisse layers colors is like a conversation, a painterly call and response. The surface has a kind of velvety texture, built up from many thin layers of paint. Look at the red of the walls, how it vibrates with a subtle energy. Then there's the piano itself, a big brown presence anchored in the room. It's not just a piano, it's a character. Notice how the keys are simplified into a graphic pattern, each stroke deliberate and playful. There's a dance between representation and abstraction that makes the whole thing sing. Matisse reminds me of Bonnard, an interest in domestic interiors, and how we experience a space. Ultimately the painting is about seeing, feeling, and making sense of the world in new ways.
