Mikuláš Galanda made this gouache of a Woman in a Scarf, and what strikes me is the economy of means, how much he does with so little. The marks are so bold and spare. It reminds us that artmaking is a process of finding the essential. I am really drawn to the physical qualities of the piece. The thinness of the paint allows the texture of the paper to shine through, giving it a kind of immediacy. I love the way the black ink outlines define the figure, but also seem to float independently on the surface. Those decisive strokes, especially in the scarf, they are so direct, so unburdened by second-guessing. It makes me think about the confidence and vulnerability involved in every mark we make. This approach reminds me of Matisse, who also had a gift for capturing the essence of a form with just a few lines. Ultimately, art is an ongoing conversation, a dialogue across time, and Galanda’s work is a testament to the power of simplicity and the beauty of ambiguity.
