Fujishima Takeji made this dreamy landscape of Setouchi, likely with oil on canvas. It’s like he's bottled a feeling, all hazy and soft, right? Look at the way he lays down the paint – thin washes, one over the other. You can almost feel him thinking through the process, letting the colors mingle and breathe. The surface has this lovely, almost velvety texture, especially in the water, which is more of a color field than a representation of water, per se. Check out the little sailboat. It's just a few strokes of white, but it feels so alive against the muted colors of the sea and sky. That little mark, so simple, it ties everything together, gives it depth and a sense of scale. Fujishima reminds me a bit of Whistler, who also played with atmosphere and mood. It’s like they’re both inviting us to get lost in the poetry of the everyday. What do you think?
