This gouache on paper, Eclat, was made by Alexander Calder in 1974. The bright yellow and red makes me think of a child's drawing. There’s a sense of play and spontaneity that really appeals. I love how the concentric circles and radiating lines aren’t perfect. Look closely and you can see the wobble in the artist’s hand. It’s like Calder is embracing imperfection, letting the process guide the image. The gouache has a lovely matte finish, and you can almost feel the texture of the paper coming through. See how the red lines vary in thickness? It gives the whole image a handmade quality, a sense of the artist’s touch. This reminds me of Joan Miró's playful use of color and form. Both artists shared a love for simple shapes and bold colors, creating a visual language that's both accessible and deeply personal. Art is about an ongoing conversation and exploration; it's not about having all the answers.
