This ‘Untitled’ drawing was made by Nasreen Mohamedi, but we don’t know when. Mohamedi was part of a generation of Indian artists who, after Independence in 1947, looked to develop a distinctly modern art, moving away from both academic naturalism and traditional Indian styles. Her abstract style connects to the legacy of European modernists such as Paul Klee, who had himself been influenced by non-western art forms. In the post-independence era, the turn to abstraction in art was related to ideas of progress and development. Mohamedi spent her life working quietly, outside the established art institutions. She was a professor at Baroda, and her delicate drawings influenced generations of students. Understanding her work involves archival research, looking at her teaching and the wider context of Indian modernism.
