This chest, ornamented with scenes from the story of Susanna, was crafted by an anonymous artist. The maker of this piece has taken a simple material, wood, and elevated it through carving. Look closely, and you will see that the story of Susanna is told in relief, across the front of the chest. The choice of oak is significant here. It would have been a readily available material and affordable, but would have required a specific skill set to transform it into the finished product we see. The material of oak, with its inherent properties of texture and durability, dictates the form and weight of this object. The labor is evident, showing a high level of craftsmanship. We can appreciate how the act of making, and the choice of everyday material, contributes to the cultural value of this object, questioning traditional art hierarchies.

This storage chest is richly ornamented: the three carved statues on the front represent the Dutch commanders William of Orange and his sons, Maurice and Frederick Henry. All three fought for the liberation of the north Netherlandish provinces. The panels between them present scenes from the Old Testament story of Susanna, who is threatened by two elderly men.
