Here we have Sandor Bortnyik's "Kompozicio 1918," crafted during a time of immense social upheaval. Dominating this composition are stark, black and white geometric shapes. They evoke hands and architectural forms, symbols of both creation and structure, hinting at a world being built or perhaps deconstructed. The image is reminiscent of ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs, where simplified forms communicated complex ideas. One cannot help but notice the hands, reaching, grasping, and even resembling the "manus Dei," the hand of God found in early Christian art. In both cases, we see the powerful concept of divine intervention. Bortnyik engages our subconscious, tapping into a collective memory. These hands, houses and landscapes, are a powerful force, resonating with our primal desire for order. The abstraction of familiar forms and primordial symbols speaks to a cyclical progression, how our understanding of these motifs evolves with changing times.
