Carel Nicolaas Storm van 's-Gravesande created this etching, "Interior of a Living Room," during a period when ideas about domesticity and privacy were shifting. Born in the Netherlands in 1841, Storm van 's-Gravesande witnessed a society undergoing significant transformation, and he captured an image of the spaces in which those transformations played out. The etching provides a glimpse into a bourgeois home, a space traditionally regarded as feminine. However, we might ask ourselves what stories are absent? Where are the people who maintained this space? The women who lived in it? The servants who cleaned it? The soft light filtering through the window creates an atmosphere of quiet reflection. The table set for tea, the neatly arranged objects on the shelves, all speak to a desire for order and control. But the shadows hint at the complexities and unspoken narratives that exist beneath the surface of domestic life. Storm van 's-Gravesande invites us to consider not only what is visible, but also what remains unseen.
