Carel Nicolaas Storm van 's-Gravesande created this etching, "Interior of a Living Room," during a period when ideas about domesticity and privacy were shifting. Born in the Netherlands in 1841, Storm van 's-Gravesande witnessed a society undergoing significant transformation, and he captured an image of the spaces in which those transformations played out. The etching provides a glimpse into a bourgeois home, a space traditionally regarded as feminine. However, we might ask ourselves what stories are absent?
