Andries Hermanus van Dijk took this black and white photograph, "Portrait of a Girl, Possibly Sophie van Dijk, Daughter of the Photographer". Imagine the photographer setting up the shot, carefully positioning the girl, maybe his daughter. I wonder what he was thinking. It's hard to know the specific story behind it, but you can feel the care in the composition. The girl's pose, her little hand on the rail. It has an old-fashioned quality, like a memory from another time, and makes me think about how we document our lives, both then and now. How painting and photography are just different ways of seeing. Artists throughout time are constantly playing with these ideas. They're influencing each other, having a silent conversation through the years. It's kind of amazing, right?
