Jonas Haas etched this portrait of Mette Laasby, a noblewoman, sometime in the 18th century. The pastoral setting is rich with symbolism. Note the flowers in Mette’s hand, symbols of innocence and virtue. The pointing gesture—consider it. It reappears throughout art history, from classical oratory to religious iconography. Think of John the Baptist directing followers toward Christ. Or, perhaps closer to Mette’s time, consider how Enlightenment thinkers gestured towards reason and progress. The dove overhead, often a symbol of peace or the Holy Spirit, might here suggest a spiritual connection to nature. But birds also symbolize the soul. Mette Laasby becomes an image of virtue and intellectual curiosity. These symbols create a powerful presence, engaging viewers on a deep, subconscious level. This is the cyclical progression of symbols—evolving, resurfacing, and taking on new meanings across time.
