Luis Álvarez Roure painted these lemons, juicy with colour, on a canvas grounded in textured brushstrokes. I like to imagine the artist at work, squinting and turning the fruit, trying to capture the true, vibrant yellow. It’s like Roure is asking, ‘How do I paint this moment?’ Maybe he’s thinking about Cezanne’s apples and oranges, pushing at the form, trying to find the weight of the things. There’s a certain delight in the layering of white paint beneath the fruit. It gives a sense of history to the work, like the ghost of earlier attempts. Look how he uses the shadows to ground the lemons, anchoring them in place with blues and greys. The painting is both an act of seeing and feeling, embracing ambiguity and uncertainty. Artists look at each other's work and learn and keep the conversation going. It's an invitation for us to look closely, to reconsider.
