Lodewijk Toeput created this oil on canvas, "Maria med Jesus og Johannes," during the late 16th century. The symmetrical grouping of figures in the foreground, combined with the atmospheric landscape, creates a sense of harmony. Note how Toeput's use of light and shadow sculpts the figures, giving them a soft, idealized form. The artist employs a limited color palette, with warm tones dominating the figures and cooler hues defining the background. The composition guides the viewer's eye from the detailed foreground figures to the distant, hazy landscape, creating depth and a sense of spatial recession. The painting invites reflection on the interplay between the material and the transcendent. In essence, the artwork is a complex interplay of form and content, reflecting broader artistic and philosophical concerns.

Toeput travelled to Italy as a young man, and here his Flemish name was directly translated into the Italian term for ‘closed well’ – Pozzoserrato. Having settled in Treviso near Venice he called himself Lodovico Pozzo da Trevi-gi. The painting is not signed, but has been attributed to Toeput because the style of the figures, the landscape in the background and the entire composition is very reminiscent of his paintings for the palace complex Monte di Pietà in Treviso. Toeput is known to have drawn a range of studies of old Romanesque church build-ings in Rome, suggesting that he stayed in that city too. Indeed, the middle distance of this painting includes an exquisite depiction of a ruin with Romanesque arches and col-umns.
