Georgia O'Keeffe made "Blue and Green Music" with oil on canvas, and what strikes me is how she coaxes such subtle tonal gradations out of relatively few colors. She was clearly interested in artmaking as a process of careful refinement. The painting’s surface is smooth, almost polished, which gives the colors a chance to really sing. The blues and greens aren't just laid down; they're blended and layered. If you look closely at the way she renders the curves, especially where the light catches them, you can see a real delicacy. The whole composition feels buoyant, as if lifted by an unseen current. Thinking about other artists who might have been on her mind, I’m reminded of Hilma af Klint. Klint used abstract forms to explore unseen dimensions. Ultimately, O’Keefe invites us to find our own rhythm and meaning in the interplay of color and form.
