This black and white photograph, Pad naar de bergen, was made by A. Callier. The grayscale gives the composition a timeless, almost dreamlike quality. Looking at the textures, I can almost feel the crisp mountain air and the rough, unforgiving terrain. There’s a stark contrast between the solid, unwavering presence of the mountains and the more ephemeral, transient nature of the sky. The way the light catches the snow is particularly striking to me. It's as if the mountains are illuminated from within. You can see the road snaking through the landscape, a pathway inviting us into the unknown. There's a sense of the sublime here, an acknowledgment of the power and beauty of nature. This photograph reminds me of Caspar David Friedrich, who used landscape to evoke a feeling of awe and reverence. It also reminds me of the work of Minor White who believed that a photograph should reflect an inner state. It's all about how the landscape makes you feel, not just what it looks like.
