Curatorial notes

David Burliuk made this painting, The Gardener, in 1948, using oil on canvas. Look at those brushstrokes! They’re so lively and expressive. You can almost feel the energy of Burliuk at work. It reminds me that painting is not just about representation, but about doing and thinking. Check out the lower left corner, where the small tree is supported by wooden posts. Burliuk captures the texture of bark and freshly cut wood with thick daubs of paint. I love how the posts are almost the same colour as the tree itself, creating a wonderful sense of unity between the natural and the man-made. The whole painting is like that, raw and full of life. Burliuk's work has links to the German Expressionists, like Emil Nolde, who also used bright colours and loose brushwork to capture emotions. Both artists remind us that art is not about perfection but about feeling.
