Curatorial notes

This is a portrait of an unknown woman by Philipp von Schoeller, made at the turn of the 20th century. During this time, photography, like many other art forms, was deeply influenced by orientalism, a Western fascination with Asian cultures. This portrait, titled "Japanerin" in German, reflects that trend, showcasing a woman adorned in what appears to be Japanese-inspired attire. She wears her hair up, held by decorative hairpins, while draped in a floral robe. It invites us to consider the dynamics of cultural representation and the gaze of the artist. How might the woman feel about being portrayed in this way? What does it mean to adopt or adapt another culture's dress? What possibilities for cultural exchange does this image offer? What cultural boundaries does it transgress? It's a piece that encourages us to reflect on the interplay between identity, representation, and the complex ways cultures encounter one another through art.
