Editor: Here we see a coin of Justinian I. The raised relief and textures are still so clear. What do you see in this piece, looking closely at the form? Curator: The die-striking is quite masterful; notice the strong lines defining Justinian's figure, juxtaposed with the symbolic "M" on the reverse. How do these elements work together? Editor: The "M" is so bold; it almost overpowers the emperor's portrait. Is that a commentary on power, or simply a design choice? Curator: Consider the medium: a coin is inherently about value. The size and placement of the "M" perhaps emphasize economic strength as integral to Justinian’s reign. We might also consider the cross. Editor: That’s a new way for me to consider it. I appreciate noticing how the different elements of the design contribute to the meaning.
