Aat Verhoog made this print called ‘Roepende Ruiter’ – or ‘Calling Rider’ – using etching. I’m thinking about that rider and his horse. I mean, what’s he yelling about? It seems urgent, doesn’t it? Like he’s trying to warn everyone. Maybe it’s like Paul Revere, but in a snowy Dutch field! Verhoog's style feels like he's channeling folk art or children’s book illustration, and yet there's something unsettling here too. That sky is super strange – it’s right on top of the scene! That thin, etched line gives everything a ghostly vibe, like a memory. Like the whole scene is about to disappear any second.
