This is a photograph from an unknown artist of the Grafmonument van Egbert Bartolomeusz Kortenaer in the Grote of Sint-Laurenskerk te Rotterdam. Looking at this picture, it’s all about light and shadow, right? The artist, or photographer, is really working with those two extremes. What you get is not just a record of a monument, but a kind of mood. I think about process a lot, the way things are made. Here, the artist coaxes out the form and the space with an eye for depth. See how the light seems to wash over the figures, almost blurring them? It's as if the monument is emerging from some kind of hazy dream. It reminds me a bit of the way Gerhard Richter sometimes deals with photography, that out-of-focus, almost ghostly feel. Both deal with art as something that's always in the making, shifting, and never quite solid.
