Palma il Giovane, painted this scene of David, triumphant over Goliath, celebrated by the women of Jerusalem. The piece gives us a glimpse into gender dynamics during the late Renaissance. The painting is split, visually and thematically, into two. On the left, the victorious male heroes return, in a show of military might. Notice, on the right, the women of Jerusalem, depicted as joyful musicians. They celebrate David's triumph. Yet, they are confined to the domestic sphere. They hold no real power, despite their expressions of jubilation. "Art evokes the mystery without which the world would not exist" said Rene Magritte. In its representation of gender roles and expectations the painting evokes questions about the status of women in the 16th century. The artist seems to be asking, are they active participants in society, or are they relegated to the sidelines? The painting reveals the complex interplay between celebration and marginalization, and the emotional and personal dimensions of those who exist on the periphery of power.
