Alfred Stieglitz made this photograph, Songs of the Sky, using gelatin silver. It's a small work and quite muted, like a quiet murmur. The tones feel very close together. There is a real feeling of process, of something happening in the moment, not forced. Looking at the upper half of the picture, I love how the greys melt together, like watercolor bleeding on damp paper. Then, there's this darker stroke on the left side, almost like a tree trunk interrupting the view. It gives the picture a focus, a structure. This picture reminds me of Georgia O'Keeffe's paintings; she and Stieglitz were partners, of course. Both of them were interested in finding the abstract in the real world and in the emotional impact of simple forms. What do you see?
