Curatorial notes
This green glass bottle, etched with the inscription "Vermenghd u vreugd met zorge", or "Mix your joy with sorrow," was created by an anonymous maker. The bottle's rounded form was achieved through glassblowing, a process demanding skill, breath control and expert manipulation of molten glass. Notice the fine engraving, made by a steady hand using abrasive tools, revealing clear glass beneath. The inscription suggests a contemplative purpose. Perhaps the bottle once contained a medicinal elixir or a special cordial, meant to be consumed in moderation. The skilled labor involved in producing such a vessel speaks to a society where specialized crafts were valued. Yet, the anonymity of the maker also hints at the complex relationship between craft, labor, and social status. By considering the materials, making, and cultural context, we gain insight into the artwork's meaning, challenging our preconceived notions of art and craft.
