Evelyn De Morgan made this image of Our Lady of Peace in paint, and what strikes me is how she built the composition out of light. The way the colors blend and bleed together suggests a real openness to experimentation. Look at how the figure of Our Lady is rendered; the white dress isn't just white, it's a play of soft pinks and greens, almost like watercolor washes. These colours give depth, as though light is caught within the folds of the fabric. Around her, the artist has created this swirling vortex of cherubic figures, each one a small study in the colour blue, which could reference Yves Klein, or maybe it's just a love for the colour of the sky. De Morgan embraces ambiguity, offering us a vision that feels both ethereal and grounded. She reminds us that art, much like faith, is a process of continuous seeking and finding.
