Domenico Gnoli made this painting of a city sidewalk, in what looks like sombre, earthy pigments. Just imagine him, maybe in his studio, head tilted, squinting, coaxing these muted browns and greys into existence, building up the city sidewalk one careful mark at a time. I'm really drawn to that network of vertical lines, like a kind of visual poetry. I wonder if Gnoli was thinking about urban decay, the way cities age and crumble, or maybe he was just fascinated by the patterns and textures of the street. You can almost feel the grit and grime under your feet, right? It reminds me a bit of Alberto Burri’s work, that same attention to the material, the cracks and imperfections that tell a story. Artists are always in conversation, aren't they? Sharing ideas, pushing each other, even across time. I find it inspiring, that sense of connection and shared inquiry.
