Kitao Masanobu, also known as Santō Kyōden, created this colorful woodblock print of three women around the late 18th century. The process of making ukiyo-e prints like this one involved several skilled artisans. First, the artist would create a design, which was then transferred by a wood carver onto a block, usually cherry. The carver meticulously cut away the areas that would not be printed, leaving a raised surface. Different blocks were required for each color, with careful registration to ensure proper alignment. Finally, the printer applied ink to the blocks and pressed them onto paper, building up the image layer by layer. The texture and grain of the wood, though subtle, contribute to the print's overall aesthetic. The flat planes of color and the delicate lines create a sense of elegance and refinement. This print wasn't just an image; it was the result of a collaborative effort, blending artistic vision with technical skill. This highlights how the worlds of craft and fine art have always been intertwined.
