Editor: Here we have an untitled landscape sketch by an artist from the British School. It's a pencil drawing, very delicate. What strikes me is how raw it feels, like a quick study. What do you see in it? Curator: For me, the interesting thing is to consider the paper itself, and the labor involved in its production and distribution. Who had access to this material, and what does that say about the artist's social positioning? Editor: That's a really interesting perspective; I hadn't considered the paper itself as part of the story. Curator: The materiality challenges the traditional high art and craft boundary. It prompts us to consider the means and social context of its creation. Editor: I never thought about that before. It really changes how you look at even the simplest sketch. Curator: Exactly! It moves us beyond just the image to the whole system of making art. Editor: Thanks, I will definitely remember this for my paper!
