Mosè di Giosué Bianchi created this intimate etching, "Vrouwen in gebed," using a metal plate, acid, and ink. The image emerges through a labor-intensive process of scratching lines into a coated plate, which is then bitten by acid, capturing the finest details and textures. Look closely, and you can see the varying depths of the etched lines that create the tonal range, from the deepest shadows to the lightest highlights. The etched lines articulate the solemn atmosphere of the space. It has a subdued quality, the artist skillfully uses the etching technique to evoke the quiet devotion of the praying women. Bianchi's mastery of the etching process allows him to convey a sense of immediacy. The marks have an intimate quality, as though drawn directly from life. The way in which the composition is structured gives the viewer a privileged glimpse into the private devotions of the figures depicted. Considering the materials and the making of this artwork encourages us to appreciate the skill involved in the printing process. This challenges the traditional hierarchy that often separates fine art from craft.
