Editor: Here we have Lucas Cranach the Younger's depiction of Charles V. The level of detail for such a small work is incredible! What can you tell me about this portrait? Curator: It's a print, which accounts for the fine detail. What I find fascinating is how Cranach uses symbols – the pillars of Hercules with 'Plus Ultra', and the Habsburg eagle - to shout "empire". And those patterned tights! What do you make of them? Editor: I'm floored. The tights alone could be a whole thesis! Curator: Exactly! It makes you wonder what other hidden gems are concealed in this seemingly straightforward portrait. Editor: It really does! Thank you for your insights!
