Robert Frank made this photograph, St. Petersburg, Florida, at some point in his lifetime, using a camera and film. It is a study in stillness, yet it has a ton of implied motion from that blurry car. What gets me about this image is the feeling of being frozen in time. A group of older folks sit on a bench, maybe watching the world go by, while a car speeds past in a blur. The contrast between the static figures and the motion of the car creates a kind of tension, almost like a held breath. Look at the way the light falls on their faces, highlighting the wrinkles and textures of age. Those details aren't concealed and really bring a depth to the image. Frank really captured the feeling of a specific moment, but also hints at something larger, something about time and change. Like Eugène Atget, Frank had an eye for the poetry of the everyday. It's not just a picture, it's a whole mood.
