ANP made "Bailybrug," a black and white photograph which stands at 18 by 24 centimeters. The composition uses layers of intricate steel structures juxtaposed with organic forms. Look at the bridge itself, those repeating triangular units. Each part is contributing to the overall structure. I'm reminded of Hilma af Klint's diagrams, there's the same sense of a hidden order revealed through simple forms. The photo is all about the material quality of the metal. The men are lifting, straining, and acting as essential components in this network of labour. Note how the palm tree pushes into the sky, a natural form which contrasts with the harsh geometry of the bridge. The image becomes a study in contrasts, echoing the dialogue between the man-made and natural worlds. It's a conversation about what we build, and how we build it, that is always on my mind when I am making my art.
