Curatorial notes
Curator: I'm immediately drawn into a world of gentle, dreamy colors. There's something so calming and almost ethereally happy about it, a quiet sort of joy bubbling up like a spring. Editor: Indeed. What we’re observing is Dayou Lu’s “Fun in the Lotus Pond,” painted in 2020 and now residing in the Shanghai Museum. It is a watercolour piece which blends a traditional medium with a distinctly modern sensibility. Curator: Modern, yes! I see it! The blossoms are beautifully rounded and stylized. The petals seem to float, and that little grasshopper feels like an invited guest, full of mirth! I love how those shadowy black branches almost look like calligraphy too! Editor: The piece definitely plays with cultural heritage while also creating a vision of optimism. Lotus ponds are central to both Buddhist and Taoist symbolism representing purity, spiritual awakening, but, of course, this artist is doing it through a thoroughly contemporary lens. Note also that there is what art historians would describe as ‘Orientalist’ elements and ‘naive art’ style integrated within this picture. Curator: Oh, yes, those spiritual references absolutely come across! Purity of form, clarity of colour! And I do like it when something so steeped in the classics doesn't take itself too seriously, you know? Makes me smile. Editor: Well, its playful approach to a profound theme underscores how tradition can inspire vibrant, novel creations. And it brings it into the daily lives of people like us in our day-to-day, and it creates access. That is the gift of art in modernity. Curator: Agreed! It reminds me that even amidst all the seriousness of the world, there’s always room for a little fun, especially in a lotus pond! Editor: Absolutely! “Fun in the Lotus Pond” is a testament to the artist’s capacity to bridge temporalities and, perhaps, allow all of us to reconnect with what is lasting while acknowledging change.
