Curatorial notes

Laurent Guyot captured this view of the port of Naples with pen and watercolor, at a time when Naples was a vibrant port city and a popular destination for European travelers. Guyot’s detailed rendering of the harbor, complete with a smoking Vesuvius in the background, invites us to consider the allure of Naples as both a picturesque locale and a bustling center of maritime activity. The figures in the foreground are presented in a state of leisure. They are seemingly unbothered by the volcano. Through Guyot's eyes, we witness not just a geographical location, but a moment in time imbued with the social and economic dynamics of 18th-century Europe. The city was a stop on the Grand Tour, when upper-class Europeans, especially the British, took in the sites of continental Europe, which were primarily in Italy. The image serves as a window into a world of exploration, trade, and cultural exchange, and it prompts reflection on our relationship to place and history.
