Louis Truchy made this print, Fashionable Gentlemen of the 1740s, sometime in that decade. It’s an image that offers us a glimpse into the visual codes of class and status in 18th-century France. The emphasis on clothing, pose, and accouterments speaks volumes about the subject's social standing. It's worth remembering that clothing at this time was not just about personal taste, but a clear marker of one's place in the social hierarchy. Consider how institutions of the court like Versailles, and to some extent the Académie Royale, prescribed norms and etiquette for dress and comportment. The print, made during the reign of Louis XV, reflects a society deeply invested in appearances, where fashion was both an art form and a political statement. To further understand images like this, we can turn to fashion plates, journals, and even conduct archival research to uncover how these visual symbols were deployed and understood in their own time. Studying art history, in this way, becomes a journey into understanding social norms and values.
Comments
During the early 18th century small series of costume plates reported on the fashion of the day. Women wore the loose-fitting robe volante, also called a ‘sack-backed gown’ in English, over which women sometimes added a short, hooded cloak known as a bagnolette. Men dressed in long coats over a waistcoat and knee-breeches. Pig-tail wigs were adorned with large bows, and tricorne hats were tucked under the arm rather than worn on the head. The two large prints from around 1760 show Parisians out for a stroll. Curiously, the women wear wide paniers (hoop skirts) for their promenade on the ramparts. In the caption underneath, they are condemned as silly slaves of fashion who blindly follow the dictates of the latest trends.
