This photograph of Isola dei Pescatori with a rowboat in the foreground was taken by Franz Goerke. It’s small, like a postcard almost, and rendered in grayscale. I imagine Goerke, out on the water, composing the scene. The little island is a cool shape, and then there’s the boat, leading your eye into the picture. It’s like he's saying: come along! I wonder what he was thinking about when he made it? Photography is so different from painting. It's a fascinating way of seeing and experiencing the world, framing a moment, capturing the light and shadow. You can see that Goerke was thinking about composition, about creating a balanced and pleasing image. It's about what you choose to include and what you leave out. Artists are always having this conversation, across time, inspiring each other's creativity. To me, a photograph, like a painting, is about feeling. It embraces ambiguity, inviting multiple interpretations. It’s an ongoing inquiry.
