Adriaen Lommelin rendered this image of ‘The Triumph of the Holy Trinity’ using engraving. The artwork abounds with Christian iconography, the most prominent being the Holy Trinity: God the Father, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit, symbolized here as a dove. God holds a scepter, a classic symbol of divine authority, while Christ is accompanied by the cross. These symbols are not static; they are constantly being reinterpreted through time. The cross, initially a brutal instrument of execution, became a symbol of salvation and faith. Similarly, the scepter, once a sign of earthly power, is now used here to denote divine sovereignty. Such symbols evoke deep-seated emotional responses and cultural associations. The collective memory of suffering, redemption, and divine power is summoned each time we see them, engaging viewers on a subconscious level. They are part of a non-linear cyclical progression, constantly resurfacing and evolving through different historical contexts.
