Editor: This print, made between 1713 and 1720, depicts "Fireworks at the celebration of the Peace of Utrecht, 1713". It's attributed to an anonymous artist and housed at the Rijksmuseum. The engraving is so intricate! What do you see in this work? Curator: The overwhelming feeling is celebratory, Editor, but it's more than just pretty lights. The fireworks themselves are a visual symbol. Consider their ephemeral nature, their explosion into brilliance before fading. Peace is like that—a striving towards a brilliant moment that is so easily lost. Note the architecture of the temporary structures. Editor: The text at the bottom seems to map different sections. Curator: Precisely. That rigid formality contrasts with the chaos of the fireworks. It’s designed to reinforce order. Notice, too, the images within the central structure and smaller symbolic details surrounding it: angels, allegorical figures...these contribute to a multi-layered representation of the Peace, with a particular message from the people and those that rule them. Does any figure draw you in? Editor: The angels near the central artwork. I keep looking at them. The engraver clearly gave attention to detail, in drawing the human form, but also in incorporating classical figures and symbolism. Curator: Those details link this temporary spectacle to enduring traditions. What could that be telling us about society’s view on Peace? The anonymous engraver wanted to show how power and tradition play out when societies achieve these pivotal times. Editor: This makes me look at the work as an image of celebration, but also of temporary joy. Curator: Exactly! Understanding visual language adds richness to historical events.
