This is Aernout Naghtegael’s portrait of Menno Simons. Born in 1496, Simons was an Anabaptist religious leader from the Netherlands. His followers became known as Mennonites. This portrait, made well after Simons' death, reflects how he was remembered as an influential figure. Religious identity and reform, which Simons spearheaded, are at the heart of this piece. Portraits during this period often served to immortalize individuals, but also to promote certain values. Here, the engraving captures Simons with a solemn, thoughtful expression, emphasizing his spiritual depth and commitment. His plain attire and simple cap speak to the Anabaptist emphasis on humility and a rejection of worldly display. The text inscribed below the image adds another layer, praising Simons' virtues. Naghtegael’s portrait, therefore, isn't just a likeness, but a statement about religious conviction and the enduring impact of one man’s beliefs during a time of considerable religious upheaval.
