James Tissot, a French painter, created this watercolor illustrating a scene from the Bible. It depicts Satan tempting Jesus atop a building. Tissot lived through a time of great social upheaval in France, including the Franco-Prussian War and the Paris Commune. Following these events, he moved to London, where he achieved success as a painter of modern life. Later in life, Tissot experienced a religious reawakening and dedicated himself to illustrating the life of Christ. Here, the artist has depicted the Devil as a shadowy, winged figure, whose presence contrasts sharply with the serene, draped figure of Jesus. Tissot is playing with the symbolism of light and dark, good and evil, in a period of great uncertainty in Europe. Through his personal and spiritual journey, the artist offers a vision of faith tested but not broken. The emotional intensity of this scene suggests the internal conflicts we all face when confronted with difficult choices. It captures the human struggle between temptation and righteousness.
