Tankard 1555 - 1565

This stoneware tankard, standing at 8 1/2 inches, was created by Hans Glier between 1550 and 1650. The eye is drawn to the encircling frieze of figures and motifs that provide a tactile and visual experience. Glier employs a structured composition, dividing the surface into registers that reflect both classical and Renaissance influences. The upper portion features figures framed by columns and arches reminiscent of classical architecture. Below, the stylized faces and cherubs invoke a sense of humanism. This juxtaposition of elements creates a compelling dialogue between the object's function and its symbolic decoration.
