Lamouche made "The Two Naughty Schoolboys" as a print, and it has the quality of something dashed off. See how the composition is broken into little scenes, almost like a storyboard. The palette is so muted and pastel, the colors feel almost incidental to the drawing. Look at the water bursting from the drain. The color palette here, combined with the quick and fluid marks, remind me of Honoré Daumier. There's a similar sense of humor and social commentary, but with a softer, more playful touch. But what I love most is the sense of narrative and movement. Each scene tells a story, and the artist captures the energy and mischief of these two boys with such simple lines. It's a great reminder that art doesn't always have to be serious or profound, it can also be fun and lighthearted. And that ambiguity is okay.
