Faith and Charity 1792

This is Félix Lecomte's allegory, Faith and Charity. The composition divides the artwork in two, using an orb as a center point. On one side sits Faith holding a chalice and scroll, and on the other, Charity who is nursing one child and watching over another. Note how Lecomte uses symbolism within a semiotic system of signs to interpret the figures. The veil of Faith suggests mystery and divine covering, while the scroll alludes to revealed truth. Conversely, Charity is presented with exposed breasts suggesting sacrifice. These archetypes embody the theological virtues of faith and love. Lecomte's placement of the sphere creates tension. It's inscribed symbols and entwined snake suggest knowledge but also deceit. The division in this work destabilizes the established meaning of religious values and raises questions of interpretation.
