This medal was made in 1620 from copper, using a die-striking process. The striking of coins and medals like these was a highly specialized trade. The dies had to be carefully engraved, in reverse, with all the imagery and lettering. Then, using considerable force, the image would be pressed into the metal. The material properties of copper – its relative softness, its ability to take fine detail – made it ideal for this purpose. However, the choice of metal had symbolic value as well. Copper was not as precious as gold or silver, but neither was it base. Here, it spoke to the medal's function as a token of solidarity, a relatively accessible means of expressing support for Frederik V, the King of Bohemia. Looking at this object, it is clear that these medals can also be appreciated for the expertise that went into their making, and for their capacity to express powerful social meanings.
