This photograph shows Dutch internees arriving safely in Singapore, although we don’t know exactly when it was taken, or by whom. I’m struck by the image’s tonal range, the way it shifts from dense shadow to soft light. The British photographer has really captured a sense of the scene with a subtle, almost painterly touch. Look at the way the figures emerge from the greyscale landscape. There’s a softness that almost veils the stark reality of what must have been a difficult journey. My eye keeps returning to the woman standing slightly apart in the centre of the frame. The Red Cross on her chest stands out, a small act of compassion amidst the institutional grey. This detail speaks to the image as a whole. The photograph opens up a space of reflection, inviting us to consider themes of displacement and resilience. You can see something of this sensitivity to atmosphere and process in the work of someone like Gerhard Richter. Art, in the end, is about opening up conversations.
