Curatorial notes

Corneille made this painting ‘Eva’ with flatly applied color and bold lines. It's interesting to think about how Corneille embraced this raw, immediate way of working, making something vivid and sort of out there. Looking at this, the surface is so direct, like a snapshot from a dream. The paint is really flat, almost like he’s screening colors directly onto the canvas. See how the snake wraps around Eva, and the way the landscape just stacks up behind her? It feels like everything’s happening at once, a riot of pattern and color. I am wondering if he was looking at Matisse when he made this, the colors are so playful. It’s really about the joy of seeing and making, and trusting where the materials take you. It feels like he’s just having a conversation with the paint itself.
